Our story

The bird park is today a private zoo established by Frank Friis Nielsen in 2003. Frank is a carpenter by profession and have always had a dream of owning his own Zoo. Since the age of 6 birds has been his passion and a great part of his life so it was only natural that it started out as a bird park before it became a Zoo.

It would take years of hard work to be able to open the doors for its first guests. When Frank Friis Nielsen overtook the property in 1993 with his wife, it was 70.000 sqm of flat potato and strawberry fields without any vegetation, and the very first aviaries were built.

The existing vegetation with the tall trees, shrubbery and flowers which all guests can experience today have been planted by hand and have grown over the years together with the Bird Park.

At the opening of the Tropical House and the Reception area several large aviaries for parrots and a couple of aviaries for smaller birds were built around Frank and his wife’s residence. Year after year more aviaries were added and the bird population grew along with it. One installation was barely done before work would commence on the next one. Frank and his staff have been working on realising new dreams and ideas for improvements for both the parks inhabitants and its guests.

In 2008 the park finally received its long desired Zoo status, approved on equal footing as the rest of the Zoos in Denmark.

The birds are still in majority, but Frank continues to add more and more mammals, reptiles and fish to the park. It remains important to him that all guests regardless of interests and passions for the animal kingdom should be able to find a species that interest them.

Frank Friis Nielsen and the rest of the staff also enjoy to educate the park’s guests about the various breeding programs and general knowledge of the parks many animals.

There have been many challenges, but stubbornness and perseverance has proven that 80 hour working weeks all year around plus a number of generous volunteers throughout the park’s existence is what it takes to become a success.

More and more now realize the importance of the park both for its guest both also for the local community. In 2016, they received the price for the Tourist Attraction of the year in Gribskov Municipality and in 2015 Frank Friis Nielsen also received the People’s Culture Price by vote in Gilleleje.

Because the park is privately owned it is not eligible for government funding. So even though the visitor count increases every year the park is still highly reliable on volunteers and contributions from sponsors to make ends meets, be it wealthy equity funds or the individual guest who decides to make a contribution. Without you all our beautiful Bird Park would not exist today.

Although the Bird Park has been centered on the birds with more than 250 species, we also have a number of reptiles and small mammals in the park.
